I realize this is a touchy subject that many parents are going to disagree with but I have personal experience with this subject and therefore feel I should share my knowledge. I wish someone had pointed this out when I named my first child. His name made his first two initials “B.M.” and I didn’t think of that when I named him. He is in his 60’s now but he has mentioned many times how he was  kidded about being full of “you know what” etc. with his B.M. initials. Kids can be cruel and love to pounce on anything that they can to kid another kid. So, when an acquaintance of mine told me she and her husband had finally settled on a name for their daughter, I didn’t say a word but perhaps should have. They named their daughter Anna Ruth. That is a pretty name except that their last name is Franklin. That means the child”s initials are ARF. I can just imagine how she will be kidded about that in future years.

I read an interesting article on this subject that I would never have thought of but it makes sense. It stated that it is more pleasing to the ear for a name to be two syllables followed by a name with one syllable, or vice versus. For instance Richard Mark or Mark Richard. Or Mary Ann or Anna Gay. You get the idea. Try it and see what you think.

Many, many years ago, when I was visiting a cousin out of town, there was a boy named “Shirley.” He was kidded unmercilessly about his “sissy” name. I felt sorry for him. He seemed like a nice guy but was extremely shy and withdrawn. I felt sure it was because of his name. It seemed cruel to me that his parents would name him that.

Now-a-days, especially with celebrities, it seems that “anything” goes. So maybe I am completely out of touch with this blog. But somehow I just don’t think so.
