This topic may not apply to many people out there but for those that it does I hope it helps. Also, even if you don’t have a problem with OAB you might have a mother, sister, or grandmother etc. that does. If so, I hope you will share this blog.
As you get older you may find that you are having more and more trouble “making it to the bathroom” to urinate. Or you have some “leakage” when you cough, sneeze, or laugh too hard. Females have more trouble with this than males but I do know that some males, especially older males, have this problem also. This is an embarrassing thing to talk about but let’s face it, we all need help in some kinds of situations sometimes.
Most females know about Kegel exercises to help strengthen the pelvic muscles to help prevent bladder leakages. These exercises can also help a female have better orgasms. I have read how to do these exercises by trying to stop the flow of urine or pause the flow over and over and do this every time you urinate. I have also read that you should exercise these muscles while lying flat down in bed rather than while you are urinating. You might wish to look this up on Google if you have more questions. There is also a very “old” type of medicine that is very popular called Oxybutynin (generic for Ditropan) that helps control OAB problems. This is by prescription only. You might wish to start out with 5 mg.ER (extended release) tablets once a day. You need to know though that this medication can cause dizziness and/or blurred vision as well as dry eyes and constipation. But as we all know every single medication that you can possibly imagine has some possible side effects. Anyway, something else you might try is to drink lots of water and other liquids spaced out throughout the day rather than huge amounts all at once. Also, try to stop drinking liquids after about 6 o’clock at night as well as empty your bladder just before you go to bed to help you hold your urine longer at night if you are having trouble with that. Do not stop drinking more liquids just so you do not have to urinate more often though. This can destroy your kidneys long term. Trust me on this. Drink at least 8 glasses of water, (tea and coffee count but water is better) each day. Drinking enough water is important for protecting your kidneys as well as maintaining good health throughout your body.
Interestingly enough, I just read an article stating how strengthening your pelvic muscles ( especially females) is kinda the “hottest” thing going. They showed a picture of a female lying on her back with her knees bent and feet flat so that her hips and thighs are elevated. The lady went on to say that strengthening her “pelvic” muscles (I’m assuming Kegel type exercises) had helped her OAB problems as well as helped her enjoy sex more. So, there you go folks, I’m happy to know this is evidently becoming very popular!
Would love comments on this.
Thanks,
Dixie
